Advisor & PI resources
Advisors and Principal Investigators (PIs) play an important role in educating the next generation of scholars and mentors. Consequently, understanding how to foster healthy authorship practices among their mentees is critical. We have put together some materials that can help—so that you don’t have to start from scratch.
Authorship Agreement
-
Our authorship agreement is a key component of our work. The agreement is meant to facilitate conversations about authorship credit distribution. We emphasize that the agreement is not a contract; it is a facilitation tool for your team.
-
Download this fillable pdf version of our agreement by clicking on the image above. We encourage you to use it when beginning your next collaborative research project—or to apply it to your current projects today. It’s never too late or too early to talk about authorship credit!
Resource Guide
-
This resource guide builds on our course; we share it with both students and their faculty advisors upon course completion. It includes tips for collaborating, suggestions for additional reading, and other resources to assist collaborative authorship teams. A copy of our authorship agreement and our university authorship policy are included.

Work with your institution
-
Recognizing the relationship between perceptions of authorship at institutions and perceptions of institutional ethical culture, we worked with our university to develop an authorship policy.
-
Consider using our authorship policy as a model and approach the faculty council and/or graduate school at your institution about developing and adopting a policy of your own.
